Supporting women in holistic practices to grow their business with integrity
Hello, %profile_name_first!
Are You Really Ready for Lasting Change? February 2009
Your powerful mind can hold you back or catapult you towards success
Old tapes, unconscious beliefs, self sabotaging behaviors many established at a young age and re-enforced by your actions over the years can have a big influence on your life. We say we want a thriving business yet our actions say otherwise.
If you are courageous and committed there is a process you can take to confront your fears and self sabotaging behaviors and begin to shift your mindset in the process.
Part of the process is asking a series of questions. Here is one of them: Ask yourself this powerful question: What is your driving motivation to make this change now?
For instance, we often make a commitment to stop a self sabotaging behavior, make some steps towards "working on it" and then find ourselves back to where we started and things have not really changed. Think of those past New Year's resolutions like getting a better handle on your finances, organizing your office, finishing your book or a host of other "shoulds". I believe they are short lived because we take action before we are truly ready. Yes, we have good intentions yet the change in behavior is not lasting. If the motivation to change is not grounded in something so compelling that you'd do whatever it takes to make a change (within ethical and legal parameters) then often you resort back to the same beliefs or self sabotaging behaviors.
Here's an example many may be familiar with:
Losing weight for that tropical vacation-you want to look good at the beach. There is nothing inherently wrong with this desire however if it is rooted only in superficial change and not grounded in more than a temporary desire to look good you may find yourself gaining the weigh back.
Contrast this with someone who is overweight and is a heart attack survivor. He knows if he losses weight he will also look good but he has a more important reason. His overall health and lifespan is at stake if he doesn't make some changes. His underlying motivation to get healthy is his desire to be alive to see his young children graduate from high school.
It takes courage & commitment to look at your mindset & behaviors and ask this question. Often these are unexamined deep seated fears, beliefs and you may need professional help. A good therapist or other support professional can be godsend and shorten the time it takes you to move through the process.
It is also important to surround yourself with people who support you and are also willing to be honest with you in a loving way. The type of people who will cheer you on and see you as powerful and capable even when you fail to see yourself this way.
