Supporting women in holistic practices to grow their business with integrity

Hello, %profile_name_first!

FOOD FOR THOUGHT JUNE 2008

This too will pass

We all have days that don’t go well.    Maybe you didn’t connect with your clients the way you normally do or you just felt “off” and you wonder if this is a phase or whether you’re meant to do the work you’re doing.

This is not a normal occurrence, but let’s face it; all of us have “off” days.  When you’re in the early phase of building your business it can seem more daunting and those voices of doubt can come up.  If you’re like most folks in holistic fields you understand the power of your words and thoughts and know that staying in a fearful or doubtful place for too long will cause you more pain and is counter productive.  What you dwell on persists.

So what can you do?

I don’t confess to have the answer or a tip sheet for these times but I do know what works for me. A pat response such as “things will get better soon”, “count your blessings”, etc. really do nothing more than annoy and frustrate. When people say these things they are generally coming from a place of wanted to help but not knowing how.  Good friends however, can meet you where you are and be okay seeing you struggle because they believe in you-even when you don’t.  They know you’ll find a way out of the fear and doubt. It’s temporary.

I had an off day like this not so long ago; one in which I imagined myself at a tedious desk job again, or as a social worker, a role I held off and on for over 20 years. The paychecks came every two weeks and I knew how much money to expect.  After coming to my sense …(it took all of 5 minutes as I contemplated my former full time job and recalled how I had outgrow that role) I knew that I had to shift my energy.

It was time to connect to my spirit

Connecting to your spirit is that connection with yourself; the part of you that loves life and knows “all is well” and “this too shall pass”

I chose to shift my energy by playing in the dirt in my garden.  I had four baby ferns to plant and the some weeding as well.  The earthy smells and the dirt on my hands (I decide not to wear the gloves this time) calmed me down.  Soon I felt refreshed and life was good again.

What connects you to your spirit?

Do you love to dance, hike, create art, read, write, talk to your partner or good friend, or play in the garden?  Take time for yourself by doing what feels right to you when having that “off” day and you’ll be amazed how quickly you can turn things around.  Remember when having one of those days that “this too will pass”

To your continued success!
