Now The Fun Begins!

THE D.E.C.A. PROCESS CONTINUED:

Proven Steps to Reach your Goals

Last month we explored the first two steps in this process.  This month we'll look at the final 2 steps to have you on your way to your new, passionate career.

STEP 3: (C)OMMIT/DOING STAGE:

If you've gotten this far and have researched your options and decided on the perfect career you need to give yourself a pat on the back.  Many people just give up and stay in their current position and never get this far.  You are so much closer to achieving your dream.  Now the fun begins as you learn more about the area you’ve chosen.  This is generally a time of excitement and enthusiasm but often is also mixed with feelings of doubt and fear.  t does take courage to keep moving forward towards something unknown. As you continue to take risks and listen to your inner voice the doubt and fear will probably lessen.  There is a saying that if you’re not sweating a lot you’re not challenged enough. Often real growth occurs only when you stretch past your comfort zone. You now must commit to doing whatever it will take to transition from where you are currently to where you want to be (your new career) The committing stage basically happens in two parts,.  This commitment is first to yourself and takes place in your mind. You decide that you’re willing and ready to do whatever it will take now that you know what direction you’re going towards.  The second part is the doing stage where you do whatever it takes to proceed towards your ultimate goal.   It may look something like the following list:

  • Update resume with new skills/positions held that are applicable to your new career

  • Take classes to learn more about new career

  • Update skills by volunteering if necessary

  • Become certified or accredited  in your new field

  • Hire mentor coach, attorney or other professional for support

  • Apply for a business loan to have necessary capital to start business

  • Join a Toastmasters group to improve your public speaking skills

  • Write a simple business plan and include your vision and mission statement

Anyway, you get the idea here.  Just commit and do whatever is necessary in your new career/field.  This part may take a few months to a number of years. Remember to balance out all your efforts with taking good care of yourself.  Stop to have fun and connect with people in your life who support you in your efforts.

STEP 4: (A)CCOMPLISH YOUR GOAL STAGE:

The final step in this 4 step process is actually accomplishing your goal.  Congratulations! You’ve worked hard and challenged yourself and now you’re beginning a new career which you are passionate about.  It took work, determination and a real commitment to yourself to get here.  Remember to celebrate your successes.  Now the fun begins!
