A life in balance is one that works in all aspects. It seems an obvious statement to say that your life is not balanced if you love your job, make lots of money and work all the time but have lousy relationships. If you are successful in some areas of your life, but way out of balance in another area, you will pay the price eventually, physically, emotionally or spiritually.
It takes some understanding of this concept, especially because many of us have grown up with the old tape, “you can’t have it all” in our heads. This is a tape that keeps many of us for going for it all and gives us permission to make excuses and play small. Now is the time to stop playing small, unless you just want the same old results.
Remember the saying “insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”
Playing Larger
How would you feel if you were playing larger? Would you have more energy and feel excited each and every day? Would you be more willing to try something new and really go for your heart’s desire? With some determination, emotional growth, trusting yourself more and paying attention to your intuition by nurturing your inner world this will become easier. The object here isn’t to feel bad about yourself because there are areas out of balance but to take inventory and get real with yourself. Most of us have many areas we could look at, so you are not alone.
Scan the following list and ask yourself what areas do you need to pay more attention to? If you have more than one area (and most of us have many), make an intension and commit to pick just one area for now that you are willing to look at. Pick the one that is the most compelling or the one that jumped out at you as you scanned the list.
- Healthy relationships
- Enjoyable work
- Intellectual stimulation
- Financial abundance/security
- Spiritual growth
- Physical Health
- Time for play/adventure
Form Good Habits
Once you have picked the area you commit to work on you will need to plan to spend some time (about 20 minutes a day) everyday for 21 days. It has been proven that it takes 21 consecutive days to form a new habit. If you have picked physical health for instance and decide to start exercising again doing it consecutively for the 21 days will guarentee a better chance of success. If you are working on finding a new job but have no idea what you want to do, just start by doing something everyday to work towards this goal. For instance:
- Day One: you might make a list of what you’re good at
- Day Two: ask friends and family you trust what your strengths are...
The most important point is that you do something each day for 21 days and you’ll be on your way to a more rewarding life.
Now that you are committed to living a life more in balance you may need ongoing support. People who have mentors or coaches always achieve more than those without support. Consider hiring a mentor or coach to support you and give you a jumpstart.
