GETTING RID OF CLUTTER; a practical approach anytime

As I’ve researched the live simple/de-clutter movement there are some common themes which can be helpful as you tackle clutter. I have used these steps myself in my life with great sucess. According to Peter Walsh, who is a regular on Oprah,to kick start you on de-cluttering your life/space you must make a commitment not to buy another thing other than what is absolutely necessary. That can be challenging during this time of year; yet you CAN DO IT!  Clutter can actually keep you from experiencing more good in your life.

Below is a simple approach taken from Peter Walsh's book,"It's All Too Much"  It is meant as a starting point for dealing with your clutter.  I suggest you pick one room at a time.  If that is overwhelming for you then pick one small area in that room and begin this process.  (I will set a timer for a short period of time, say 15-30 minutes and work uninterrupted until the timer goes off.) You may be amazed at how much can be accomplished in a short period when you are totally focused.

Think F.A.S.T!

To effectively de-clutter your space/life, think F.A.S.T!

F: Fix a time to start

Fix a time to start the process of de-cluttering your space/life. It is helpful to get your family or roommates involved. Attendance to this cleaning session is mandatory for all involved. Make sure it’s a time that works for everyone’s schedules. (If you live alone this is the easiest step)

A: Anything not used in the last 12 months

Ask yourself the following as you look at each item in your living space:

  • Have I used this in the last 12 months?
  • Will I use it again?
  • Is it worth the space it takes up in my house?
If you answer "NO" to any item, it is not necessary. So take the plunge and get rid of it! Do not move it to another room.  You may be amazed at how much stuff you have that you don’t need.

S: Someone else’s stuff

It’s a challenge when the stuff (clutter) is yours, but pretty crazy when the clutter belongs to someone else and you are allowing it to clutter your life.

  • Don’t store other people’s stuff
  • If you’ve borrowed things give them back
  • If you’ve ended a relationship or gotten a divorce, now is the time to get rid of this junk!
  • If your kids have established their own households, ask them to pick up their stuff or donate it to a worthy agency

T: Trash

The trash can is your friend. Take pride in how much you can throw away and remember your goal is to de-clutter your home. If you can’t throw something away, put it in a box to take to work or donate to your favorite charity, church or women's shelter. People like freebies, but remember not to move these items into another room-put them it in your car right away and take it somewhere the next day.

If you follow the F.A.S.T steps above, you will be well on your way to a clutter free life/space.  Enjoy the holidays in your clutter free space as you experience what really nourishes your soul during this magical time. Happy Decluttering!
